What is Tony Kanal net worth?
Tony Kanal is a British-American record producer, musician, and songwriter who has a net worth of $26 million. He was raised in a family from Kingsbury, London, England, but he moved a lot around, through London to Canada to Indiana. They eventually settled in Anaheim, California, where they owned and operated a gift shop. Inspired by his dad, Tony first dabbled with the saxophone, taking up the bass guitar some time later. This pivotal decision led him to become the bassist for the renowned group, No Doubt.
However, besides his new music career, Tony was a good boy and, listening to his parents, he decided he would go to school at California State University-Fullerton, majoring in psychology. In these years, he developed his musical talent further. Besides his work with No Doubt, he has contributed quite a lot to the music industry, producing some of the tracks for the soundtrack of “50 First Dates”. Further, he has proven his scope in songwriting and production after he co-wrote and co-produced songs for Gwen Stefani on her debut solo album, Pink on “Funhouse”, and Shontelle’s album “No Gravity”.
Early Life
Born on August 27, 1970, at Kingsbury, London, England, Kanal was accompanied by his parents, Gulab and Lajwanti, who had already moved to London before he was born. Most of Kanal’s early childhood was in London. He briefly lived in Toronto, Canada, and Munster, Indiana, but by the time he was 11 years old, he had returned to London. It was after this that the family moved to Anaheim, California, where they laid roots. Kanal went to South Junior High School and later to Anaheim High School. His musical journey started when he had the opportunity to be part of the concert band in grade 7, after which he decided to learn to play the saxophone. He learned to play the electric bass guitar shortly after he was given some guidance by his schoolmate. Kanal later joined California State University, Fullerton, for his higher education in psychology after graduating from high school.
No Doubt
Through high school, Kanal’s connections in the music scene would land him an invitation to be part of the audience at No Doubt’s first club performance on March 14, 1987, through the band’s original drummer, Chris Webb, who was a fellow student from Anaheim High School. But it was the live shows of the band that really reached out to Kanal and gave him the motivation to pursue his music career by joining the band as a bassist when he was merely 16 years old. In the years following, No Doubt slowly started gaining momentum with a series of live performances, catching the attention of some people from the music industry. In 1991, the group signed a contract with the label Interscope Records and got down to work on the debut album. The eponymous record hit the store’s shelves in 1992, corresponding with a very brutal United States tour.
No Doubt’s trajectory over the subsequent decade saw them ascend to the upper echelons of musical acclaim. Key albums by the group from this period include “Tragic Kingdom” (1995), “The Beacon Street Collection” (1995), “Return of Saturn” (2000), “Rock Steady” (2001), “The Singles” (2003), and “Everything in Time: B-Sides Meanwhile, the band managed to tour worldwide with sensationally exciting shows and garnered some of the most acclaimed awards—two Grammy Awards and five MTV Music Video Awards.
After the tour wrapped in 2004, No Doubt went on hiatus, and this allowed Kanal to look for other musical outlets. It was while doing this, meanwhile, that he forayed into production and songwriting, most notably with three tracks he added to the “50 First Dates” soundtrack. He would produce and co-write on three tracks that would be a part of Gwen Stefani’s first solo record, “Love. Angel. Music. Baby.” In 2006, Kanal added another production credit to his résumé with the debut album of Elan Atias, “Together as One,” and continued to work with Stefani on her next solo effort, “The Sweet Escape.”
Other Work
During the next years, he worked together with quite a large number of performers, including Pepper, Pink, Weezer, and Shontelle. In the meantime, when Stefani started the second solo effort, he was really much engaged in preparing a new album with No Doubt. The band really looks forward to completing the album after Stefani was done with the solo tour. After almost a five-year break, No Doubt regrouped on the road to set North American fans ablaze with over 50 electric performances. Their absolutely relentless tidal wave carried on through to 2010, when they were featured in the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C., saluting none other than iconic Paul McCartney. In 2012, the band released the new album “Push and Shove” and then succeeded in taking the headlines at some music festivals in the following years.
In 2014, five years down the line, Kanal was a leading member forming a new band, Dreamcar, with his fellow band members Tom Dumont and Adrian Young from No Doubt and AFI lead vocalist Davey Havok. The album, their self-titled debut record, came out on Columbia Records in 2017, to raving reviews and prompted a nationwide tour in support of it.
Kanal continued on his musical journey, then performing and doing projects with other musicians. In 2018, he joined Danny Elfman for the encore of Elfman’s three “Nightmare Before Christmas” shows at the Hollywood Bowl. Shortly thereafter, he unearthed the talent by delivering a set complete with 8 Red Hot Chili Peppers songs during Maroon 5’s annual Halloween bash in Los Angeles, California. Members of the band who also joined him include band frontman Adam Levine, Chad Smith, Andrew Watt, and Darren Criss. He had fulfilled the bass duties for The Offspring during their headline Australian festival tour that same year. He would later rejoin the group for the tour to Japan in January 2019. It shows his diversity and undying spirit in the music game.
Personal Life
Kanal was in a romantic relationship with his fellow band member, Gwen Stefani, between 1987 and 1994. Although by then they had separated, they appeared to be bound by a strong creative bond, having gone ahead to co-write some of No Doubt’s most successful smash hits, including “Don’t Speak.” She would later write her solo debut album’s title track “Cool,” which was inspired by the pair’s abiding friendship. Later, he had married an American home designer, Erin Lokitz, and in 2011, the couple had their first daughter and named her Coco, and in 2013, they had their second daughter and named her Saffron. Known for his commitment to veganism and animal rights, Kanal actively advocates for these causes. He, in his voice, stands up for the rights of animals and supports organizations such as Farm Sanctuary, LA Animal Save, and Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation, among others.
Real Estate
In 2005, Tony bought a house in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles for $2.725 million. In a nice coincidence, the previous owner of the property just happened to be none other than the famous actor Heath Ledger.
