What is Toby Keith Net Worth?
Toby Keith was an American country music singer, songwriter, actor, and record producer who embodied the country-music tradition. His death saw the net worth at a staggering $400 million, a clear reflection of success and great impact. Unfortunately, on February 5, 2024, Toby Keith died at the age of 62 years after he had long, bravely fought cancer.
From his breakout into the mainstream of musical history, Toby Keith will have captured the very essence of American life through song and struck a chord in the hearts of fans from coast to coast. His debut single, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” reached number one on the country charts in the early 1990s and quickly established him with a reputation as one of the new country music icons. This initial triumph paved the way for a string of hits, establishing Keith as a fixture in the genre. Memorable tracks such as “How Do You Like Me Now?!” and the duet “Beer for My Horses” with Willie Nelson further solidified him as a force in country music. Over his career, Toby Keith recorded an amazing 60 singles on the country music charts, with an amazing 20 #1 hits. In recognition of his songwriting prowess, he was honored with induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015.
Through much of his musical journey, Toby Keith showcased much of his deep patriotism and unwavering love for America. The most evident example came with his reaction to 9/11, epitomized through anthems like “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” which laid out the common feelings of a disinterested country in defiance and solidarity. While some of his patriotic works may be suspect, they underscore Keith’s indefatigable commitment to expressing his beliefs through his art.
Beyond his music success, Toby Keith was an entrepreneur at heart, keeping him busy with a number of varied business interests that reflected his very individualistic brand.
Especially, his affiliation with the “I Love This Bar & Grill” restaurant chain—a rather unique combination of culinary and live music that truly is the “Toby Keith experience”—enjoyed from one of his chart-topping hits. His business acumen spread its wings to the arena of record labels too, as was proved by his investment acumen when he shrewdly invested $400,000 in return for a 10% stake in Big Machine Records back in the year 2004. This came on the back of a very astute investment just prior to the label going on to major success with a young talent by the name of Taylor Swift. More so, the philanthropic efforts that Toby Keith gave mostly towards the veterans portrayed him as a man having the interest to give back to society. Carrying on in his life, military society remained a part of him by way of the numerous charitable events, benefit concerts, and personal contacts through which he continued to promote support and thanksgiving, and thus left a legacy not only of his accomplished music but also of compassion and giving back.
Early Life
Two sisters and a brother were born to Carolyn and Hubert Covel. Toby Keith Covel was born on July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma. He spent summers growing up with his grandmother at her Supper Club in Fort Smith, Arkansas. It was here that Toby’s love for music was ignited as he watched the talented musicians performing at the club. Be sure, by the age of 8, Toby had his first guitar and eventually would have made his way into playing in the house band through helping with odd jobs around the club.
Growing up in Moore, Oklahoma, and Fort Smith, Arkansas, Toby enjoyed some excellent times as a defensive end in the football team for Moore High School. Following graduation, he entered the oil fields as a derrick hand and advanced to become an operations manager.
At 20 years old, he formed the Easy Money Band, which would occasionally play in local bars, while he worked as an employee in the oil industry. In 1982, however, Toby received a setback when he was laid off because of the downturn in the oil industry. But he still was not discouraged and eventually landed on the Oklahoma City Drillers semi-professional football team, playing defense as a defensive end.
But these obstacles would never dampen the bloke from his love for music. During the course of the next few years, Easy Money took off and gained some regional popular success, acquiring house gigs at some honky-tonks around the area from Texas to Oklahoma.
Music Career
Toby would make his way to Nashville in the early ’90s, working on Music Row to try and get signed by one of the many record labels lining the city. He then distributed some copies of his demo tape to them, but quite half-heartedly. That prompted him to go back to Oklahoma. He had a personal goal that he would try to get a recording contract until he was 30 years old, or else he would have to think of something else. Lady Luck, however, was smiling at him when he literally got his lucky break. A flight attendant on that same flight, coincidentally a fan of the Easy Money Band, slipped Toby’s demo tape to a Mercury Records executive. The Mercury Records executive loved his music and signed him to a recording contract right then and there.
In 1993, Toby’s debut single, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” would top the country music charts and crack the top 100 in pop music. “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” had, by the time that decade ended, been played more than three million times on the radio, solidly putting that song in place as the most-played country song of the ’90s—leaving more prominent hits, including Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Achy Breaky Heart,” in its dust.
Hot Country Songs charts, including four chart-toppers: “Who’s That Man,” “Me Too,” “How Do You Like Me Now?.” and “You Shouldn’t Kiss Me Like This. He then signed to DreamWorks Records Nashville in 1998, where he broke through with the breakthrough release “How Do You Like Me Now?!” in late 1999. The track was the title cut from his 1999 album, and it would go on to rule country music in 2000 as the number one country song of the year, one of its several chart-toppers during his time with DreamWorks Nashville. His next three albums, Pull My Chain, Unleashed, and Shock’n Y’all all produced 3 more number one hits, making the albums all quadruple Platinum.
Toby kept up the breakneck pace, releasing an album every year from 1993 through 2000—all of them sold at least a half-million copies, many beyond that mark. When his label declined to take him on over certain tracks of his 1999 album “How Do You Like Me Now,” Toby negotiated the option to buy the album back for $93,000. He then sold the rights of his book to DreamWorks at the figure of $200,000, putting him in a position to strategize how he could sell 3.1 million copies of “How Do You Like Me Now.
Toby has recorded 19 studio albums over the span of his career, in addition to two Christmas albums and five compilation albums—all are sold in excess of 40 million units worldwide. His 2002 album, “Unleashed,” sold 3 million copies and featured the hit duet with Willie Nelson, “Beer for My Horses.”
Early Concert Earnings
That very year, he had his first record deal and took away an amount of $20,000 from the deal, recording his self-titled debut album in the year 1993. Keith took part in 150 concerts in between the month of March and December of that year, with each show getting a reward that would normally range from $5,000 to $10,000 per night.
Venues started charging $20,000 a show, and he continued demanding from the beginning of the tour, because the second single from his album halfway into the tour was getting played on radio extensively.
Entrepreneurial Career
Most successful and strategic in the investment by Toby is 2004 when with 400,000 he took up 10% of the record label Big Machine. At that time, really costly may be riskful decision, but now one can say that incredibly profitable. On that roster was a list of artists which included the likes of Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, and the game-changer—Taylor Swift. With such investment, each time an artist makes a profit under Big Machine, some share gets forwarded to Toby Keith.
After Toby founded his label, he was approached by one of the owners of a Las Vegas casino, Don Marrandino, who made quite an interesting offer. In the casino, Marrandino suggested a Toby Keith-themed restaurant, which later opened there under the name “I Love This Bar and Grill.” By the end of 2004, this business had grown to be among the 50 highest-grossing restaurants in the country.
While many
Toby Keith, pleased with the progress, saw more hope. When Toby saw how his friend Sammy Hagar managed to sell his Cabo Wabo tequila brand in 2007 for $80 million, this really served as an eye-opener to Keith and inspired him in such a way that he got eager to step into the spirits business. Originally, he was thinking of producing bourbon or vodka, but he was deterred by questions of mass production and market saturation. Finally, he opted for Mezcal and launched its “Wild Shot” Mezcal in March 2011. That year, Wild Shot became the best-sold Mezcal in the US. Spirits ventures equaled the crown of his budding business empire, estimated to have been earning him $60 million to $100 million annually. His strategic investments and entrepreneurial drive have also pushed him to become a successful businessman, alongside his acclaimed music career.
Personal Life
On March 24, 1984, Keith got married to Tricia Lucus. Three children of Shelley (born in 1980 and adopted by Keith in 1984), Krystal (born in 1985), and their son, Stelen, born in 1997, were added to the family. Additionally, Keith is a proud grandfather to two granddaughters and one grandson through his daughter Shelley.
Tragedy struck on March 24, 2001, when Keith’s father lost his life in a car accident. And that event, with the deep implications of September 11th, 2001, is what gave birth to the anthem that has been controversially labeled “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)” by Keith. The song was a mega-success, especially with servicemen, but it also brought him an estrangement from his fellow singer, Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks.
Keith is also an active one in a host of causes. He recorded a public service announcement for Little Kids Rock, a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing music education in our neediest underprivileged US public schools.
He has also supported Ally’s House, a nonprofit organization in Oklahoma whose goal is to help children in their battles against the fights they have to undergo with cancer.
Dream Walkin’ Farm
Dream Walkin’ Farm In Norman, Oklahoma, Toby was the proud owner of a 300-acre estate known as Dream Walkin’ Farms. The property was vast and full; it was not only a 10,000-square-foot mansion but also used to operate as a top-class Thoroughbred horse-breeding facility. Other than the horse breeding, the ranch also indomitably raised cattle like beef, pork, and turkey, which were sold online.
Death
Death In the mid of 2022, Toby had delivered very sad news about him being diagnosed with stomach cancer. On 5th February 2024, at the age of 62 years, he succumbed to this disease.
